Director of Operations (Full-Time)

Job Purpose

The Director of Operations has a full-time leadership role that includes oversight of the programs of multiple departments. Oversight includes understanding the role and mission of each department, ensuring that communications between departments are timely and effective, and that the management of all departmental projects and programs is consistent with the Tribe’s standards while fulfilling the requirements of grant funders. In essence, the Director of Operations is responsible for ensuring that all departments work as a cohesive team dedicated to fulfilling the Tribe’s mission.  

Oversight includes coordination of new departments and enterprises and providing training for new team members on the Tribe’s standards as they relate to programs and projects and transitioning them into the Operations team. Oversight also includes coordination of outside consultants and contractors to support the needs of various departments.  

The Director of Operations works as a bridge between the operational departments and the administrative department, which includes finance and human resources. The Rappahannock Tribe’s structure includes the Tribal Government, the Rappahannock Tribe Foundation, and Rappahannock Enterprises, a for-profit business entity.  These separate legal entities work together seamlessly to fulfill the Tribe’s mission: 

The mission of the Tribe is to preserve Rappahannock culture, social structures, and political structures while educating the public on the rich contributions that Rappahannocks have made and continue to make to Virginia and the Nation. 

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership experience, and understands accounting and budgeting, reporting, and knowledge of compliance with federal and nonprofit regulations.  The successful candidate will also have a bachelor’s degree in business or a related field and have a strong (5+ yrs.) background in program/project management, non-profit organizations, economic development, or related experience. Knowledge of grants, grant reporting and processes would also be a plus.  

Professionalism, excellent verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, reliability, and dependability are required. Must have the desire and ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment and the ability to coordinate multiple teams and partnerships with level-headed leadership. The position requires the candidate to be at the office, Monday through Friday from 9-5.  The successful candidate will need the ability to work flexible hours for special programs as needed, some travel, and training will be required. A full benefit package with health and dental insurance, two weeks of vacation, and sick time.
