Elder Daniel Fortune was Honored at a Special Tribal Meeting at the 2007 Rappahannock Pow-Wow

The 2007 Pow-Wow was dedicated to Pocahontas and our elders who refused to leave their families, leave their lands and forfeit their heritage. Pocahontas made a sacrifice by marrying John Rolfe and establishing herself an agent of change for both the English and the Powhatans. She did this so that she could save her people from complete annihilation and it worked because we are still here.

Likewise, our elders sacrificed the education of their families and lives to stand firm here on tribal lands and refused to be moved.  It is because of those sacrifices that we are still here today existing as tribal nations.

The Rappahannocks held an honor ceremony at their 2007 Pow-Wow  to honor the elders for sacrificing their lives for them and the future of their people.

Elder, Daniel Fortune, Chairman of the Tribal Council was honored along with his wife, Voncie 'Bright Eyes' Fortune, as well as, Dorothy Richardson, former treasurer, and Beulah Tabscott for keeping the fires of tradition burning at Rappahannock.

Daniel Fortune spoke a blessing over the next generation and walked on to be the Great Spirit thirteen days later.
